Add a Santa Postmark to Your Kids Santa Letters

If you’d like to make your holiday mail stand out this season , consider getting a Santa postmark from Santa Claus, Indiana. There’s no charge for this fun postmark , and you can send all your mail – from Christmas cards to kids Santa letters – through the Santa Claus post office to be postmarked and sent directly to its final destination. Sound fun? It is! Here’s how to join the millions of people who’ve gotten a Santa postmark to their mail since the pictorial postmarks became available in 1983.

The small town of Santa Claus, Indiana is the only town in the world with a post office named after St. Nick . Because of that, it’s incredibly busy during November and December . During most of the year, the Santa Claus post office processes about 13,000 pieces of mail per month. But when the holiday season approaches , that number skyrockets. In 2008, the Santa Claus post office expected half a million pieces of mail to come through the office between November 15 and December 20. Everyone loves adding an official “Santa Claus” postmark to their family Christmas letters or Christmas letters from Santa.

The special postmark image is designed by a local high school art student as part of an annual contest, so each year brings a new design.Many customers send their mail to this town each year to get the new postmark.

A 2008 US Postal Service news release said , “The holiday postmark has become one of the most popular in the nation.” The press release quoted the Santa Claus, Indiana postmaster as saying, “Many customers traditionally drive hundreds of miles to personally obtain the cancellation on their holiday mail.”

Here are some guidelines the postmaster suggests when requesting a Santa postmark :

– Allow a 2×4-inch space near the stamp for the Santa postmark;
– Add proper postage to your cards or letters before bringing them to the post office;
– Don’t send your holiday mail too soon. The special Santa picture postmark is only available in December;
– Don’t enclose bulky items (reindeer food, stickers, etc.) in your holiday mail;
– Limit your requests for the Santa postmarks to 50 picture postmarks (hand cancellations) per person per day.

 Simply follow these rules and then send your cards and letters – with correct postage already affixed – in a sturdy envelope or box, and mail to:

Be sure to send your box or envelopes early. The post office should receive them no later than December 15 to ensure Christmas delivery.

White Christmas and Hanukkah Decorating Ideas

Christmas is almost here.  Are you dreaming of a white Christmas?  You can make your own white Christmas with decorations that remind you of snow and ice…even if you live where it is hot.  You don’t even have to have all white.  You can use other icy cool colors, like blue, purple, aqua or silver.  Instead of using the traditional, green and multi-colored decorations, why not  break away from tradition and experiment with making a white Christmas.  In general, you should choose this color scheme if it looks good with the colors in your home.  You would not want to use it if you have a lot of beige walls or furniture as they would blend into the background.

Instead of your multi-colored lights, you can use white Christmas lights inside and outside your homeand supplement them with blue if you wish.  Hang white icicle lights from your house.  Your house will really stand out in all white amid the multi-colored homes of your neighbors.

Inside, you can have a white or white flocked tree, trimed with white lights and white or different shades of blue bulbs, icicles, bead strings and ribbons.  Choose gift wrappings in the white and blue range to go with your tree and other decoraitons.

You can set your table with a white table runner set with a white, blue and silver center piece and place settings and other decorations.  Likewise, a mantel or sideboard can be decorated with similar decorations.

If you like garlands, you can use flocked garlands to drape on your mantel, stairs, doorway or exterior of your home and trimmed with white lights. To warm up your color palate, use an occasional pinch of gold amid the white.

This is also a color palate that is perfect for Hanukkah. You can use these colors and substitute a decorative Menorah or Dreidel for the tree.  There are also lots of decorations in traditional Hanukkah themes to add to your home.

Make yourself a winter wonderland in your own home and yard.

     Have a Very Merry Christmas!         Have a Very Happy Hanukkah!

How Do LED Lights Work?

LED’s are found in all kinds of electronic devices, and often provide the tiny light you see when the device is turned on. You are asking yourself, what is an LED (a light emitting diode) anyway? and how does it work? This is the very non-techie answer to the question.

An led is basically made of semi-conductor material. In other words is made of material that normally will not conduct electricity, but with the addition of impurities will conduct electricity rather well. If you attach an N-type of semi-conductor (has extra electrons) to a P-type semi-conductor (has electrons missing or holes), you have a diode. When you attach a similarly charged current to the respective ends of the diode the electrons can meet up with the holes and you get a current which emits energy in the form of light. Hence, light emitting diodes (LED’s). All of this is done with a much lower use of electricity (as much as 80-90% less) at a lower cost.

You have probably seen that LED’s come in different colors. Why do they have different colors? The colors come about and depend on the type of impurity that was introduced to the semi-conductor material. An additional way that color develops is when the diode is coated with phosphors which absorb the color light being emitted by the diode and in turn throws off a different color.

These color differences are now being put into use in the development of all kinds of uses. One of the earliest uses was the indicator lights in electronics (remember Hal in the movie 2001?). We have gone far beyond the indicator lights. We now have soft blue nite lights, LED spotlights, LED replacement lights (replaces incandescent light bulbs), and of course LED Christmas lights in white, blue, multi-colored, red, green and so on.

All of this is creating ways to have a bright future at a lower cost for energy.  Of course, LED lights are still a little more expensive than incandescent, but the overall costs are lower when you figure in the cost of the energy.
